Rat Removal & Rat Exterminator Service -Charleston, SC

Scratching in the interior of the home or crawlspace in Charleston are all signs that you may have rats (sometimes referred to as roof rats in Charleston) that require removal.

Rat Removal and Rodent Control in Charleston, SC

Not all rats are roof rats in Charleston, of course, but generically they are referred to that way since they like to enter the home through the roof. Rats and humans have coexisted for centuries, and having rats in your home isn’t necessarily a reflection of your home’s cleanliness. Many buildings in the area are affected by rat or other rodent infestations, and that’s where we come in. Metro Wildlife and Pest is proud to be your rat exterminator in Charleston and is available if you need rat removal. Our team can assist you in getting rid of these unwanted visitors.

Rodents are definitely not a good houseguest.  Rats carry parasites and diseases that make them unsafe to live near for an extended period of time. Rats are incredibly smart, resourceful, and great problem solvers. However, they can also cause damage to your home and put you at risk for flea and tick issues and rare diseases like hantavirus pneumonia. If you think your property is currently hosting rats, please book a free inspection online or contact us

We serve all areas in Charleston, South Carolina including: Summerville, Mt Pleasant, Isle of Palms, Goose Creek, Daniel Island, Sullivans Island and Kiawah

Charleston Rat Removal & Remediation Process

Methods to prevent rats and other rodents from entering your building vary, but one thing remains true: They cannot survive without food, water, and shelter; if you remove these things from their environment, they will leave of their own accord. Read on to learn how to identify signs of rodent infestation and what methods can be used to safely rid your home or business of rats or other rodents once and for all.

READER’S NOTE-Portions of this page are designed to help the reader attempt to address rat removal in Charleston on their own, but we need to be clear: most cases require professional help or they will get worse and cause more damage. Instead of contacting a pest control company, contact a wildlife company. You’ll get better treatment (read: poison is not the primary weapon) for your home, less risk to you and your family, fewer unwanted side effects, lower costs over time, faster service—the list goes on. The main reason to go with a wildlife company is that they know rats  and other rodents much better than pest control companies do. That translates into more effective treatments that aren’t as likely to cause damage or bring more pests into your home. Pest control companies are equipped with rat poisons that can be dangerous if accidentally ingested by pets or children.

There are several steps involved in roof rat or brown removal in Charleston, but you can trust our experienced rat exterminators in Charleston to handle it with ease. Because Charleston roof rats and brown rats can chew through walls, and they’re notoriously persistent, it’s important to have a long-term rat control strategy. We’ll begin by inspecting your home for entry points, then sealing those entry points, effectively locking the rats inside. This makes them easier to trap, which is how we’ll remove the rat population from your home. After trapping in key areas, we’ll seal off any remaining openings, and may recommend population control services (bait stations) to continue monitoring the problem. In the vast majority of cases, these strategies work well, but you can always trust Metro Wildlife to stay on top of your roof rat (or other types of rats) issue, no matter what.

Unknown to us, some pigeons had made our attic their home for years. The waste they had accumulated was downright disgusting - and, as I would soon discover, a severe health risk. Anyways, we only noticed the problem when I went to the attic to trace a leaky pipe. I was shocked by the amount of bird waste I saw. I promptly called this company, and they sent technicians to perform a full attic restoration. After they were done, you could not tell that I was dealing with a severe bird problem just the previous day. I was pleased with their service, and the price was worth it!

Excellent service. Communicated well and eliminated the mole problem in my yard which was most important to me. The people were very informative and nice to talk with. They were prompt and came when scheduled. The service was expensive which is my only negative but all other aspects of my experience were positive.

Rat Removal Charleston

Know where they are coming from

The rats that most people encounter in Charleston, SC are usually Norway rats (also known as brown rats), which can grow to a size of about two feet long. They usually live outside, but will seek food or shelter if they move into a human-populated area. You’ll know you have these critters around if you see large numbers of them running across your lawn at night or find droppings and gnaw marks on your property. Most people will mistakenly identify these animals as roof rats in Charleston, but they are not. Rodent removal and rat exterminator techniques are the same for both though.

Set traps correctly

For best results, place traps along walls at a height of about 4 inches from floor to bottom of trap. Be sure not to set rat traps where children or pets can reach them; use care when setting rodent traps for large rats. When disposing of rodents that have been trapped, use an airtight container with a secure lid. Rats have both keen hearing and sense of smell, so placing traps on flat surfaces may deter their effectiveness. It’s essential to protect against future rat infestations by sealing any entryways into your home or building. Use steel wool around any wires, pipes or vents entering your property. Rats are most active between dusk and dawn — consider setting out traps just before bed each night, as well as during daytime hours if you know rats are entering your property during daylight hours.

Use rodenticide baits correctly

There are a few different kinds of rat poisons available on today’s market, but they all have one thing in common: they work by ingesting rodenticide. However, you shouldn’t think of poison as a primary treatment; rather, it should be thought of as a preventative maintenance tool. You should only use rodenticide baits if you already have the rat problem under control and the home or business has the entry points sealed. Otherwise, the rodent may die in the walls and will be impossible to find.

Symptoms of rats in a building

Most of the time, Charleston roof rats and brown rats will stay out of sight, which makes them hard to detect.   There will be evidence however.   Droppings under the sink or laundry tub, scratching in the walls are the most common.   People also hear scratching in the attic and crawlspace in Charleston too.

Scratching alone, does not mean rats though.   Raccoons, possums, bats and squirrels also scratch.  However, if a rat is scratching in the attic or crawlspace in Charleston, and something startles is (like someone knocking on the wall), it will hunker down and get quiet.   Squirrels will run off and raccoons will simply continue scratching.
